DMs/SDMs

Normal Supers (DMs) take one stock from the power gauge while MAX supers (SDMs) now take 3 (instead of having the red flashing life bar). The colour of the background will change whenever you perform a SDM.

To perform the SDMs, you press both the buttons AC (instead of A or C) or BD (instead of B or D) while executing the DM movements.

Counter/Armor Mode

Counter mode and Armor mode (uses 3 power stocks) are back and is supposedly to be improved.

SNK claims that the Counter mode will be this year's main focus and will be absolutely crucial.

Active Striker System

Active striker system is used in the same way as calling a striker (pressing BC), but now you can use your striker while attacking and throwing.

You can also call out your striker immediately when you have been knocked down in the air, preventing yourself to be further being hit in air combos.

Taunt Move

For this year,"Dis" will have a different effect. Instead of decreasing opponent's power gauge,it uses one of your power stock to one of your striker bombs that you have used.

Emergency Escape

Unlike KOF99, the "Escape Move" used in KOF96 until KOF98 will be used again this time. Players will be able to use it to their advantage by rolling forward or backward to escape opponent's attack.

Choice Of Editing Team During A Challenged Match

Unlike any other previous KOF series, you are now given a choice to change your team members when you are being challenged! But once the battle against the human players are over and when you are back fighting the computer, you will be reverted back to your original team members again!

3rd Colour Costumes

When selecting your characters, if you press A or C, the characters will appear with their original colours and as a second colour when B or D are pressed instead.

Furthermore, for the characters listed below, press C and D at the same time and the characters will appear in their third costume colours as shown in the pictures! (These are actually the winning entries of the KOF'99 Colouring Contest held by SNK some time back!)

Emergency Escape (Front)

Press + AB.

Emergency Escape (Back)

Press +AB.

Gaurd Cancel Emergency Escape

Press or + AB when blocking opponent's attack; uses one stock of Power Gauge

Super Heavy Attack

Press CD (Can be done in air too).

Emergency Counter Attack

Press CD while blocking opponent's attack; uses one stock of Power Gauge.

Break Fall

Press AB when about to fall onto the ground.

Escape from throw

Press AB or or + any button when about to be thrown by the opponent .

Taunt

Press START.If at least a stock of Power Gauge is present,One stock will be converted to one Striker Bomb.

Activate Striker

Press BC;Uses one Stiker Bomb.

Activate Active Striker (Front)

Press BC while performing normal attack or throw;uses one Striker Bomb and one stock of Power Gauge if used immedietly after a normal throw. Uses one Stiker Bomb otherwise.

Activate Counter Mode

Press ABC;uses 3 stock of Power Gauge.

Activate Armor Mode

Press BCD;uses 3 stock of Power Gauge.
